If you love soccer, you know the importance of practicing your skills or just enjoying playing the game with your family and friends. Whether you are a student-athlete, a professional, or just an enthusiast, having a soccer field to play on to improve your skills isn’t just a want, it’s a need!

But what if you had the convenience of just walking out onto your backyard and practicing the game you love? It’s not as far-fetched as you may think! Here’s how to create your own soccer field experience at home.

How Much Will a Backyard Soccer Field Cost?

Building your own soccer field doesn’t have to cost a king’s ransom. In fact, it can cost you anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on what you’re starting with and how elaborate you want it to be.

After you mark out your field, you just need a soccer ball and a goal! But depending on your budget and how elaborate you want your at-home soccer field to be, you can add a fence, lights, etc., to make your experience complete.

Some things you may be able to do yourself but hiring it out can be a necessary approach when it comes to wiring, fencing, etc. It’s a good idea to price out your labor and materials prior to starting your project to avoid unnecessary surprises and delays.

How Much Space Is Required for a Backyard Field?

The smallest recommended size for a backyard soccer experience is about 15 yards by 20, but you can make do with an even smaller size if you keep this in mind: 0.6251:1 width to length ratio, and the width should be about 1.25 times the length if you only need one goal.

What Can I Play On?

Natural grass (especially if it’s already established, like in your backyard!) is the least expensive option. Still, as you know, soccer can take a toll on turf, so make sure to augment or enhance it with more robust grass types like Kentucky bluegrass, Bermuda, or perennial ryegrass.

You also want to make sure that the grade of your yard is no more than 1-2% and that it gets a good mix of sun and shade to promote the optimal growth and recovery of your lawn. You also need to be aware of any drainage issues, as otherwise, you may wind up playing on a soggy field (and tearing up your grass even more).

Artificial turf is the most expensive option, but is all-weather and all-season durable and requires no upkeep or watering! While you can install artificial turf on your own, this might be an area that you might want to consider leaving to the professionals for the best long-term results and gameplay.
